How to be a Backpacker to Bromo

backpackert to bromo

Backpacker to Bromo - It’s hard to get to Mount Bromo without a tour, but it’s worth it. Visiting an active volcano with Kawa Ijen was two of the highlights of my backpacking adventure in Bromo. I liked the area so much that I returned a year later and completed the Mount Bromo climb again.

Featured on the covers of travel guides around the world, Mount Bromo is one of Indonesia’s most famous landmarks. Many tourists go there every year to hear its roar and see it spew ash. This volcano is located in the Tenger Massif area of East Java within the Bromo Tenger Semeru National Park. This crater cuts through four other volcanoes, all of which tower high above Bromo. It seems size isn’t everything when it comes to volcanoes.

Mount Bromo is very alive and rarely without its characteristic ash clouds. However, it is completely safe to visit and you can safely hike through the surrounding desert and climb straight to the top. At the peak of activity, the crater may be filled with visitors until the vibrations subside. Therefore, if you are planning to visit, we recommend checking the news before your trip.

Below is my experience of visiting Bromo personally to give you an idea of what to expect. First of all, let’s discuss the practicality of how to visit Mount Bromo without a tour.

How To Trip , Backpacker To Bromo

There are several ways to reach Mount Bromo on your own, but my journey started in Probolinggo, one of several starting points for reaching the national park. Surabaya could also be an option. Arriving in Probolinggo, you need to head to Cemolo Lawang, a highland village not far from Mount Bromo. Apart from traveling, there are three other ways to travel to Cemoro Lawang.

  • Private Taxi

If your budget is tight and there are enough people in your group to fill all the seats, a private taxi will be beneficial. Quite expensive for a solo backpacker, and it cost me around 700,000 rupiah one way.

  • Motorbike

Unless you are traveling with heavy luggage, a motorbike is the right choice. The roads there are steep and I couldn’t imagine doing this with the main group in tandem. If you choose this option, it will cost you around IDR 200,000.

I didn’t even think about renting my bike because I wasn’t sure if it would be available in Probolingo since it’s in tour mafia territory.

  • Omnibus (Bemo)

This is the cheapest and most frustrating way to get to Mount Bromo without a tour. First, I used this option twice. Bemos are available near the Bayuanga Terminal (Probolingo Bus Terminal). Please note that shared buses do not depart from Bayuanga Terminal itself.

When you arrive at the terminal, go to the restaurant queue in front of JL station Raya Bromo. Search for “Depo Marinda” or “Probolinggo-Cemoro Lawang Bus Terminal” on Google Maps to see the location. I also call it an omnibus, not a public bus, because it is different from ordinary local transportation.

Designed for tourists. So don’t expect locals to queue for this spot and help you find a suitable place. At the time of writing, the total bus cost was set at IDR 525,000 divided by all passengers. When capacity is reached (15 people), the price is IDR 35,000 (less than £2) per person. Or you can make a difference to other travelers.
